Why We Like The Z1 MIPS Helmet
One of our favorite lids we carry is the Z1 MIPS Helmet from Belgian based brand Lazer. It might not be the lightest or the most aero, however, its classic looks, MIPS protection, large and numerous vents, and at 190 grams, still plenty light weight, creates a combination of features that take it straight to the top. There's no shortage of fine helmets in the premium category range and a bevy of Lazer specific details means this helmet holds its own as a top-end racing and training helmet with safety and styling to match.
As many of its counterparts do, the Z1 relies on a four-piece In-Mold polycarbonate outer shell and EPS foam lining to protect against initial impacts. Lazer extends the helmet's shell to enhance protection at the temples, a sensitive area that's especially vulnerable in crashes, and then adds a final inner layer of protection with MIPS technology. MIPS, or Multi-Directional Impact Protection System, refers to the Swedish technology added to the helmet in the form of an inner basket that rotates slightly upon impact to absorb the brain-damaging rotational energy created in certain crashes.

Oval Melon? This is your helmet.

I have a large oval head. Not many brands make helmets specifically for true oval heads ... Enter Lazer. Wasn't familiar with them before I started looking for a new brain bucket. They even have a PDF chart on their website detailing which helmets are built for oval heads and which fit round heads. The Z1 is light, fit is excellent, and it's well ventilated. Their superb retention system also makes it possible to adjust the depth, which is awesome because a MIPs layer tends to take away just enough depth to keep helmets riding high. There's even space for an optional accessory LED to be mounted in the back for added visibility at night. Superb helmet ... You just forget it's on your head. As for sizing, just measure your head and follow the chart for sizing recommendations.

very nice helmet

Bought this to replace an ?expired? helmet. had never owned a lazer. The fit is pleasantly roomy. I was always a large, and in the large size the lazer fits perfectly on my bare bald head with the tightening system all the way down. My old helmet was tight even when loosened all the way. The lazer just feels good and secure. For those with bigger hair and if I wanted to wear anything under it, the fit allows me to just dial it out, put on a cycling cap or beanie, and it still fits perfectly. The helmet bag is a nice touch, too. As it?s the extra set of sweat pads. I ordered the aero shell too, couldn?t resist and although I don?t race, it should come in handy in the cold wet of the Pacific Northwest. I would order the optional tail light if I could find one. Get yourself a premium helmet like a Lazer.

Wonderfully Comfortable Helmet

I have to say my head is a bit warped, all helmets sit a bit skewed to one side. Either that or my face is not centered on my head. The Z1 suspension system does really well fitting my shape. It's adjustable not just in circumference but also allows the rear to be lengthened or shortened to fit the back head shape. For myself I lengthened a few notches and than dialed in the top to slightly grip perimeter. So comfortable I forgot helmet was on, much to amusement of those wondering why I was walking around in a helmet. In comparison I also use a Smith Forefront 2 MIPS mountain bike helmet. The Z1 is noticeably more comfortable than the Smith.
